The type of photographer that is best for this kind of work, is a portrait photographer. A professional portrait photographer is one that that understands lighting and composition in order to bring out the best in their subject. This would be from aesthetics, to the mood that needs to be portrayed for the desired headshot.

Some photographers prefer black and white as it brings out all the hard lines and the tends to be “punchier”, especially for street photography and reportage that show mood and tell real stories. I personally love black and white, as it is a gradation of monochrome.  My suggestion is shoot in color and convert in post to black and white thereafter. In studio, photographers will often use a plain baby blue backdrop for black and white, as it tends to work nicely for effect, white is very cold and used only for specific looks. When capturing family portraiture, black and white is not a popular choice. Most family and baby pictures are shot in color, same as fashion, where the colors play a large role.

One of the biggest problems is shadow and uneven light, especially in mid-day sun.

Remember, an agency or a casting company needs to present real people to the client, and they offer this through video clips and the use of still photography to capture expression and looks. It is no good have people in the photographs, who when called for a casting, look nothing like the photograph.
